Amada for Rush Orders: 7 Questions to Get You Through a Crunch

I'm a procurement coordinator at a mid-sized job shop. We handle custom enclosures and precision brackets, mostly for medical device and robotics clients. Over the last 8 years, I've processed roughly 300 rush orders—where “normal lead time” doesn't exist anymore.

Here's what I've learned about using Amada machines when the clock is ticking. These are answers to questions I get from other ops managers almost weekly.

1. Can I actually find an Amada press brake for sale on short notice?

Yes, but you won't get a brand-new V-Bend. That's a 12-16 week lead time.

What you can get is a used or restored Amada press brake. We've sourced two this way: one HG 1003 from a dealer in Ohio, and one HR 1003 that had been sitting on a floor for six months. Both shipped within two weeks.

The trick is knowing where to look. Dedicated machinery resellers—not general auction sites—usually have a few Amada units in stock because they know the demand is consistent. I'd call three or four of them, explain the deadline, and ask if they have a unit already crated and ready to go.

Oh, and don't forget the control retrofit. Some older models come with NT or NT+ controllers. You can run production on them day one, but you might want to upgrade to a 2D or 3D simulation package later. Something to budget for.

2. Is the Amada punch press worth it for a one-off urgent job?

If you mean buying a whole new punch press for a single rush order? Almost never. The ROI doesn't add up unless you have a pipeline of work.

But if you already have an Amada punch press—say an EMZ 3610—and you're trying to decide whether to run the rush job on it or farm it out? Then yes, it's worth it. The EMZ series has a 33-station turret, and you can set up parts for a 10-piece run in under 15 minutes. That's huge for a 48-hour turnaround.

Everything I'd read about Amada punch presses said they were "high-volume workhorses." In practice, I've found they're actually better for low-volume rush jobs than the marketing suggests. The setup speed matters more than raw speed when you're scrambling.

3. Does a fiber engraving laser fit into a fast production line?

Absolutely. But you need to plan the material flow.

A fiber laser like the Amada FLW 3000 ENG can engrave serial numbers, logos, and date codes at 20+ meters per minute. The laser head itself is the fast part. The bottleneck is getting the part to the laser.

I learned this the hard way. During our busiest quarter in 2024, three clients needed emergency serialization for FDA audits. We had the fiber laser idle while operators manually loaded parts from a cart. We should have staged the parts on a conveyor table beforehand.

Here's an insider tip: most laser suppliers won't tell you this, but the "standard" package often includes a manual loading station. For rush jobs, ask about an automated shuttle table during the quote process. It adds maybe $8,000 to the cost, but it cuts part handling time by 40%.

4. Is a hyperthermia plasma cutter better for urgent cuts than a laser?

It depends on the material thickness.

For anything over 1 inch thick, a Hypertherm plasma—like the HPRXD series—is faster than a CO₂ laser on a rush job. The cut quality is lower, but for structural components that get welded or boxed, that's often acceptable.

Everything changed for us in March 2023. A client's order arrived with a critical error: they'd spec'd 1.25-inch mild steel, not the 0.5-inch we'd quoted. The laser couldn't handle it in one pass. We swapped to our Hypertherm plasma, adjusted the cut path, and delivered 36 hours later—barely.

What most people don't realize is the plasma cutter's true cost isn't the machine—it's the consumables. For one rush job, you might burn through a dozen nozzles and electrodes. That's a few hundred dollars you didn't plan for. Factor that into your emergency budget.

5. Can you cut brass with a plasma cutter? (I get this question a lot.)

Technically, yes. Practically, it's a bad idea for a rush job.

Brass is a copper alloy, and copper conducts heat and electricity extremely well. When a plasma arc hits brass, the heat dissipates quickly, which means you need more amperage to cut through. That leads to dross buildup and a wider kerf.

Here's what you need to know: if you have to cut brass, use a laser. Specifically, a fiber laser with a wavelength that copper absorbs more readily. An Amada FLW 3000 fiber laser will cut 0.125-inch brass at a decent speed with an edge quality that doesn't need secondary finishing.

I should add that we've also used waterjet for brass in a pinch. Slower than laser, but the edge is pristine. For a rush job where the brass is cosmetic—say, architectural trim—waterjet is actually faster than laser because you skip the deburring step.

6. What about Amada welding for emergency repair work?

Amada's welding solutions—like the AVW series—are good for consistent production welding. For emergency repairs on existing machinery? Look elsewhere.

An Amada laser welder is a purpose-built tool. If you need to weld a bracket back onto a frame at 2 AM, you're better off with a MIG or TIG setup that's already in your shop. The Amada welder is for precision autogenous welding of thin sheets. It's not for structural repairs.

The vendor failure that changed my thinking about this happened in June 2022. We tried to use our Amada welder to repair a press brake back-gauge mount. The weld penetration was insufficient, and the mount failed again within a week. We ended up bolting on a reinforcement plate and using the Amada welder for its intended purpose: seam welding enclosures.

7. Should I buy used Amada equipment just to meet a deadline?

My honest answer: only if you have a specific job for it within 60 days.

A used Amada punch press or press brake can be a lifesaver for a single rush order. But the transaction cost—shipping, installation, training, potential repairs—often eats up the savings.

Here's a contrarian view: I've seen companies buy a cheap used Amada press brake to win one rush contract, then never use it again. The machine sat on the floor, depreciating, taking up space. That's false economy.

If you absolutely need to buy, look for a machine that's been recently serviced and has a transferable warranty. We paid $18,000 for a used HG 1003 that came with a 90-day warranty from the dealer. That gave us peace of mind for the rush job, and we now use it for 20% of our regular production.

Otherwise, consider renting. Some equipment dealers will rent an Amada press brake for a month at maybe $2,500 to $4,000. That's better than a $20,000 purchase you regret in 6 months.
